TIPS TO LOOK AND FEEL YOUR BEST

Marissa Sylvester

Do you want my secret for how to look and feel your best over the holidays? Well, they aren’t really secrets, but I do have some tips that are proven to work, and I want to share them with you!

Whether it’s a casual family gathering, a night out with friends or a fancy work party, there are a few things that will make you glow from the inside out – and who doesn’t want to glow?

STAY HYDRATED

I’ve said it before and I will keep saying it, water is wonderful for our bodies. The benefits are endless and during the holidays when we are busy rushing around it’s really important to keep your water with you so you can stay hydrated.

Did you know that our bodies are 60-65% water?

Water is necessary for the breakdown and transport of nutrient materials across and through our cells. That means, if you are not drinking water, early, often and continuously you are damaging the very make up of your cells.

Water decreases inflammation, controls body temperature, is beneficial for cushioning our joints and is paramount in flushing bacteria and toxins from our bodies.

And, water keeps our skin cells hydrated and moisturized, which gives it a natural glow.

WATER IMPROVES OUR COMPLEXION

Drinking enough water can help you combat a variety of skin issues including acne, psoriasis and eczema. Water does this by helping your digestive system flush out toxins from your body, which naturally improves your complexion, creating healthy, glowing skin.

Holiday tip: Drinking two cups of water will increase blood flow to the skin, which can help even out your skin tone and complexion. So, over the holidays, try drinking extra water to help keep your skin looking its best!

DRINKING WATER CAN REDUCE PUFFY SKIN

Puffy skin is a result of our bodies retaining water. How do we correct this? Drink more water! I know that sounds counterintuitive, but here is why drinking more water will help with swelling skin:

We retain water when our bodies are dehydrated. It is a natural reaction. When we don’t have enough water in our body, our body goes into protection mode and retains the water it has. This results in swelling or puffiness.

To combat this and smooth out your beautiful skin, drink more water!

Holiday tip: Drinks with higher levels of sugar like alcoholic drinks like wine or cocktails with juice and pop cause dehydration, so remember to drink water in between these drinks and before bed to rehydrate your body. This will reduce puffiness the next day!

If you want to reduce puffiness and swelling and smooth out your skin, make sure you’re drinking enough water.

GET YOUR ZZZs

We all know that getting a great sleep has tons of health benefits but during the holidays getting quality sleep is really important to help you look and feel your best.

LIKE WATER, SLEEP SUPPORTS GLOWING SKIN

When you sleep, your body naturally pushes blood flow to your skin, which helps keep it healthy. You may not notice this if you are a great sleeper, but you might notice that after a bad night’s sleep, you wake with your skin looking a wee bit ashen or dull. That is because your body didn’t have the rest/time it needed to get enough blood flow to your skin.

Holiday tip: Do your best to get to bed at a reasonable time and if you can, don’t set your alarm! Getting the right amount of sleep with improve the appearance of your skin and that naturally makes us feel confident with our appearance.

BRIGHTER, LESS PUFFY EYES

Do you suffer from puffy eyes or dark circles under your eyes after a bad sleep? Most of us do.

Puffiness comes from not being well hydrated and those dark circles occur when blood isn’t flowing well — which happens when you’re low on sleep — it can collect under eyes and become visible, since the skin there is so thin.

Holiday tip: Drink your water and get your ZZZs! Trust that you will look and feel better.

REMEMBER SELF-CARE AND HAVE FUN!

Drinking your water and getting plenty of sleep are definitely part of the self-care category, but having fun is just as important to your self-care over the holidays.

I encourage you to do things that make you feel good about yourself, happy and more vibrant. Here are some of the simple things that my clients and I do to bring an extra spark of ‘feel good, look good’ to our holidays:

GET A MANI/PEDI

Having freshly manicured hands and feet can be a real treat if you don’t do it regularly. And something as simple as having festive nails can really make you feel fabulous.

SCHEDULE A YOU DAY

Grab a new book, a tea (or coffee) and curl up in your favourite spot and read. Maybe play some music, flip through magazines or binge watch an old favourite. Just spend time alone with yourself. You will feel so good after and the lingering effects will bring a glow to your appearance.

GET YOUR HAIR DONE…

Going to a party? Book an appointment to get your hair cut or even just washed and styled for the event. Having your hair done – especially when they wash your hair and light massage your scalp (I get tingles just thinking about it) – always bring a smile to the face, which brings a natural confidence.

And if it’s a fancy party, get your make-up done as well! Not only is it nice to have other people do our hair and make-up but you can pick a look that you might not be able to achieve if you did it yourself and that can be really fun!

The holidays are upon us and it will be easy to get so busy that we forget to do the simple things needed to look and feel great. But if you drink your water and get plenty of rest, you will naturally feel better. And when we feel better, it is easier to make the effort to infuse our busy schedules with some fun self-care activities!

I hope you have a great holiday season!
